Cat baths and de-shedding at home, without the carrier

Most cats never need a bath. They wash themselves all day, and being wet is stressful for them, not a routine chore. The exceptions are real, though: a long-haired cat that can't keep its back end clean, an older or heavier cat that has stopped reaching, a cat that got into something sticky, a hairless breed whose skin oil has nowhere else to go.

WashDash lists independent GTA groomers who come to you and post their real open times. A cat wash or a de-shed can be booked on its own, and the groomer you book is paid directly.

What a cat wash involves

Brushing and a mat check come first

Water makes a mat tighter, so a groomer brushes the whole coat and checks the armpits, belly and behind the ears before the cat gets wet. A cat that is already matted usually needs the mats dealt with first, and sometimes the bath waits for another visit.

Warm water and a shampoo made for cats

The water is lukewarm, poured or sprayed gently rather than run over the head, and the face is wiped with a damp cloth instead of rinsed. The shampoo is one made for cats, not a dog or human product.

A long rinse

Whatever shampoo stays in the coat ends up in the cat's mouth the next time it washes itself, so the rinse takes longer than the wash.

Drying at the cat's pace

A towel first, then warm air on the lowest setting only if the cat accepts it. Plenty of cats won't tolerate a dryer at all, so a warm room, a second towel and a quiet hour is a normal plan. A damp cat stays out of drafts until the coat is dry.

What to know before you book

1

A bath does not stop shedding. It loosens hair that was about to fall anyway, so it comes out in the tub and under the brush instead of on the sofa, and a good brush-out afterwards does the rest. Cats shed all year and often more when the seasons turn. If the shedding is sudden, patchy, or comes with bald spots or flaky skin, that is a question for a vet, not for a different shampoo.

2

Shaving is not a shedding fix. A shave-down can be the kindest option for a badly matted cat, which the lion cut page explains, but it solves mats, not loose hair.

3

Some cats should not be bathed at all. A cat that panics at being handled is a vet conversation first. A groomer will stop and reschedule rather than force it, and in Ontario only a veterinarian can sedate a cat.

4

If your vet has prescribed a medicated shampoo for a skin problem, tell the groomer when you book and ask whether they take that on. Not every groomer does, and the vet's directions come first.

Do cats actually need baths?

Most don't. A healthy short-haired cat that grooms itself rarely needs one. A bath helps when a cat can't keep itself clean: a long coat that gets soiled at the back end, an older or heavier cat that can't reach, or a cat that got into something sticky or greasy. Hairless breeds such as the Sphynx are different, since there is no coat to absorb skin oil, and are usually washed on a regular schedule your vet or breeder can suggest. If the cat may have picked up something toxic that it will lick off, call a vet or an animal poison line before you bathe it.

Can a mobile groomer wash my cat at home?

Yes. A wash and brush-out is a normal booking, either on its own or between full grooms. Each groomer lists the services they offer, their own price, and whether they take cats at all, so check the profile before you book.

Will a bath or de-shed stop my cat shedding?

No, and no honest groomer will promise it. It takes out loose hair that was about to come out anyway, so there is usually less of it around the house afterwards. Hair that falls out in clumps, a thinning coat or bare patches should be looked at by a vet.

How is a cat dried after a bath?

Mostly with towels. Some groomers use a dryer on its lowest, quietest setting if the cat is fine with it, and many cats are not. The aim is a cat that is dry and warm, not one that has been held through a dryer it hates.

Can I use dog shampoo on my cat?

It is better not to. Dog and human shampoos are not made for cat skin, and a cat licks its coat clean, so whatever stays in the fur gets swallowed. Some dog flea products are dangerous to cats too: permethrin, for one, can poison a cat. Check the label of anything made for a dog before it goes near a cat.

My cat is matted. Can a groomer just bathe it?

Usually not. Water tightens mats and a wet mat is harder to take out, so a groomer works on the mats first, and often the kinder answer is a clipper job, covered on the de-matting and lion cut pages, with a bath afterwards or on another day. Tell the groomer when you book if you have felt mats.

Are you a cat groomer?

Owners of long-haired and senior cats look for someone who handles cats gently and rarely find one. List your real calendar on WashDash, set your own prices, and keep 100% of every booking — no per-lead fees.
