What actually moves the price of a car detail in the GTA
Two quotes for the same car can arrive hundreds apart. Here is what really sets the number — condition, scope, add-ons, and access — and how to compare quotes without guessing.
Condition is priced before scope
The single biggest reason two quotes for the same car differ is the state it arrives in. A tidy commuter and a family car carrying ground-in pet hair, sand, a winter's worth of road salt, and an old coffee spill are not the same job, even under identical 'interior detail' wording. Detailers estimate labour from the seats, carpets, and headliner — heavy soiling, staining, odour, and matted hair all add time, and time is most of what you are paying for. Sending clear photos of the worst areas when you ask for a number gets you a quote that is less likely to jump once the car is in front of them.
Interior, exterior, or the full reset
'Detailing' spans a wide range, so decide what you actually need before comparing prices. An interior visit — vacuum, surfaces, glass, and a seat-and-carpet extraction — is a different job from an exterior wash-and-protect, and both cost less than a full interior-and-exterior detail. Depth matters too: a maintenance clean on a car that is kept up is not the same as a deep shampoo and extraction on a neglected one. A full detail booked for a car that only needed its carpets done is money spent on panels that were already fine.
Add-ons carry their own labour
Some jobs sit outside a standard package because they genuinely take extra time: pet-hair removal from woven upholstery, salt-stain treatment and re-extraction, odour work, lifting set-in stains, engine-bay cleaning, and headliner care. If any of these apply, say so up front — a number given without knowing about the shedding dog in the back seat will change once the detailer sees it. Paint correction and ceramic coating are a separate category with their own pricing and are not part of a normal maintenance detail.
Vehicle size and where it is parked
A two-door commuter, a three-row SUV, and a work van are not the same surface area or the same number of seats to clean, so size moves the price on its own. Mobile detailing adds a second variable: the detailer needs room to work and, for many services, water and power. A flat driveway is simple; a condo parking level with low clearance, no outlet, and no drain can limit what is possible on-site or change the approach. Confirm your parking, water, and power situation when you book so the quote matches what can actually be done there.
Comparing quotes without guessing
Because condition and scope drive the figure, a price offered with no photos and no defined scope is really a guess. Ask each provider what the quote includes, what they treat as an add-on, roughly how long they expect the job to take, and whether the number is fixed or an estimate that can move once they see the car. A slightly higher quote that already covers the pet hair and salt you were going to pay for anyway is often the cheaper one in the end. The same caution applies to any single citywide 'average': it is built from cars that are not yours, so treat it as background, not a quote. The number worth trusting is the one a specific detailer gives for your vehicle once they have seen its condition.
