Golden retriever grooming: keep the feathering, lose the tangles

A practical rhythm for ears, feet, feathering, undercoat, and the places moisture likes to hide.

Comb after the brush

A slicker can make the surface look finished while small tangles remain close to the skin. Follow with a metal comb through the ears, collar line, armpits, trousers, and tail feathering. Stop before pulling becomes uncomfortable.

Drying is part of skin care

Dense coat holds moisture. After swimming or bathing, dry through to the skin around the ears, neck, and tail base. Persistent odour, redness, discharge, or tenderness belongs with a veterinarian rather than a cosmetic appointment.

Book by coat and comfort, not a rigid calendar

Many goldens benefit from a professional bath, dry, undercoat release, nails, feet, and tidy every six to ten weeks, with seasonal variation. Senior dogs or dogs anxious around dryers may need shorter visits or a provider experienced with low-stress handling.
